FAQs FOR CLINICAL HYPNOSIS
Is one asleep or unconscious in trance?Trance is not sleep. A source
of the misconception is derived from the Greek word “Hypnos” the
Greeks God of Sleep. In trance, alpha wave is produced by the brain
and you hear the practitioner’s voice
Can everyone be hypnotised?Nearly everyone except if less than 7
years old; if the individual has impaired concentration or Alzheimer’s
disease; psychotic individuals; asthmatics using brown inhalers;
bipolar depressives and epileptics
Will I do something against my will? No. You won’t carry out
something against your moral beliefs. The unconscious mind always
looks after
your best interest
Will I remember what happened during hypnosis? The majority of the time
the answer is yes. Occasionally in the deeper states amnesia may arise
but this need only occur when it is beneficial e.g. regression to a rape
scene or a traumatic event where the individual does not wish to have
conscious remembrance
What is waking or alert hypnosis? This is a natural statee.g. when a sportsman
enters the zone, when one is daydreaming or on autopilot
What happens in the brain during trance? An Electroencephalogram (EEG)
is used to record electricity of the brain. During waking state we produce
delta waves (2-4 Hz slow high amplitude waves) and in trance alpha waves
(12-14 Hz higher amplitude)
How will I feel in trance? There are a number of physiological responses
as indicated below:
Physical Level
Relaxation response - Relaxation in trance state unwinds muscular
tension and sets up what is called the “relaxation response”.
Herbert Benson MD believed that the relaxation response could improve
long
term health by relieving stress and activating the bodies hidden
defences. Research has established that trance and the relaxation
response:
Decrease heart and breathing rate
Lower and optimise metabolism
Increase the flow of blood to hands and feet
Relax muscles
Balances hormonal levels.
By creating one part of the relaxation response, the chain of the
other responses follows – helps to defend the body against
disease
Emotional/Mental Level
Heightened perception
More focused
Access to the inner mind and deeper connection to your creative thoughts
and feelings
Greater control over the autonomic functions of the body
Access to early childhood memories and more controversially glimpses
of past lives
What is the ideal state? A deep trance is the most effective for healing
but we work with what we’ve got and there are ways to deepen
state
Who was Milton Erickson? More than any individual, Erickson has been
responsible for shaping the modern view of hypnosis. His contribution
came from his
ability to locate an individual’s inner resources for coping
creatively with the real problems of everyday life. Erickson believed
that patients
could utilise their own mind-body processes for healing through trance.Hypnosis
uses and develops a client’s present resources, strengths and
experiences to accomplish meaningful goals.
